Esta investigación es un estudio sobre la evolución y los usos públicos y sociales de las representaciones culturales de Japón en Occidente, su circulación y reproducción, y las relaciones de poder en las que se inscriben. Como cualquier trabajo sobre las representaciones de un país oriental esta investigación es deudora, de una u otra forma, de la tradición historiográfica inaugurada por Edward Said en Orientalismo, obra que proporcionó un lenguaje, un espíritu y unas herramientas conceptuales fundamentales para analizar la invención occidental del Otro oriental.
