The fish employed in this study were reared in the INRA Station of Hydrobiologie (St-Pee sur Nivelle, France) and obtained in the context of a scientific collaboration with Dr. Edward Beall, to whom we are more than grateful for his kind and continuous support. We thank S. Glise (INRA, France) for taking care of the fish at the Lapitxuri experimental station, and I. González Pola (University of Oviedo, Spain) for the technical assistance. A. Salas (University of Oviedo) performed cytometry analyses. This study was funded by the Spanish National Grant MCYT REN2003-0303.
