En la Francia multicultural actual, la música de África Occidental forma parte íntegra de la cultura y la música francesas. Esta música es la heredera de una tradición que se remonta al siglo XIII, o incluso antes, en el poderoso Imperio de Mali que entonces dominaba una parte de este vasto territorio. En la cultura mandinga, la música está reservada exclusivamente a los griots, una casta de bardos, oradores y genealogistas, encargados de preservar y transmitir la tradición oral. Esto ha marcado profundamente la producción y difusión de la música en África Occidental hasta la actualidad. Hoy en día, muchos griots se dedican únicamente a la comercialización de música, dejando de lado algunas de sus funciones tradicionales. La época colonial de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX transformó el paisaje musical de la región. Los instrumentos europeos importados durante este período, como las guitarras y los de viento metal, así como los géneros musicales occidentales, especialmente los estilos afrocubanos, se han mezclado con la tradición mandinga dando origen a los géneros africanos modernos. Aunque al principio la lengua francesa colonial se usaba sólo ocasionalmente en estas nuevas corrientes musicales, se generalizó con el paso del tiempo. En primer lugar, en busca del éxito internacional, pero finalmente se convirtió en una parte indisociable del paisaje musical, reflejando las particularidades socioculturales.
