Un cuerpo para descubrir y leer: adolescencia y eros no normativo en la obra de Jeanette Winterson y Beatriz Gimeno

Abstract

El punto de partida del presente trabajo es establecer una comparativa entre la obra literaria de dos autoras, la española Beatriz Gimeno (1962—) y la británica Jeanette Winterson (1959—), planteando como hipótesis la posibilidad de hallar una serie de intersecciones dentro de su espectro literario, así como distinguir aquellos ámbitos en que se diferencian. El primero de los objetivos de este trabajo será el analizar los episodios, personajes y comportamientos en los que las autoras despliegan una sensibilidad que escapa de las dicotomías y las visiones tradicionales acerca del género y la sexualidad. Sin pretender encuadrarse bajo ningún tipo de etiqueta, las obras de Winterson y Gimeno sí presentan elementos lésbicos, bisexuales y otros semejantes, que visibilizan una serie de realidades que, en el ámbito literario actual, se encuentran escasamente representadas, salvo ejemplos minoritarios. En segundo lugar, se analizarán aquellos episodios en los que aparezca el motivo del despertar afectivo y sexual, que, por lo general, aunque no de forma sistemática, en las obras de Winterson y Gimeno es asociado a la época de la adolescencia. Se expondrá cómo surgen estos afectos que no concuerdan con lo que la sociedad espera de estas personas jóvenes, y a qué obstáculos se enfrentan, como la violencia en distintas manifestaciones; también se incidirá en el análisis del contexto, que ostenta importancia en ambas, pero, de forma especial, en Gimeno, que sitúa varios de sus textos en el período del franquismo, dentro de una atmósfera de represión estatal contra las sexualidades no normativas. Por otro lado, las representaciones corporales constituirán el motivo temático central en el que se basará el tercer objetivo de este análisis. Se otorgará relieve a la manera en que se expone el erotismo entre mujeres, además de la aparición de imágenes asociadas, de algún modo, con el cuerpo femenino, como la madre, la bruja o la diosa. También se prestará atención al cuerpo maltratado por la violencia en sus diversas acepciones, además de por los estándares de belleza que rechazan las anatomías consideradas feas, viejas o enfermas. Por otra parte, se planteará el análisis de las realidades corporales mirando hacia un futuro cercano, casi presente, en el que el cuerpo, y las identidades expresadas a través de este, cambian a una velocidad cada vez mayor, a través de figuras como el cyborg, el poshumanismo o las diferentes opciones que contienen las teorías queer. Se investigará cómo el cambio también ha llegado al cuerpo masculino, si, a través de una serie de transformaciones beneficiadas por el feminismo, sería posible alcanzar una masculinidad menos normativa y más abierta a nuevas relaciones no jerárquicas de género. Por último, dentro de las conclusiones, y dado que ambas creadoras continúan en activo, se incluirá una valoración global de la obra de cada una, calibrando no solo el valor literario, sino también el alcance de las mismas a través de las temáticas reseñadas, y se especulará sobre qué dirección podrían tomar sus trayectorias en el futuro. Será en este momento cuando pueda plantearse si el título de la “literatura lésbica” tiene algún fundamento dentro del conjunto global de sus producciones, o si solo se trata un elemento más, relevante pero no determinante a la hora de exponer la calidad de sus escritos. SUMMARY The aim of this Doctoral Thesis is to establish a comparison between the literary work of Spanish author Beatriz Gimeno (1962—) and British novelist Jeanette Winterson (1959—), presenting as a hypothesis the possibility of finding a series of intersections, as well as differences, within their literary spectrum. The first objective of this work will be to analyse the episodes, characters and behaviours by means of which the authors display a sensitivity that transcends the traditional dichotomies and views about gender and sexuality. Without trying to fit into any type of labelling, the works of Winterson and Gimeno do present lesbian, bisexual and other similar elements, which make visible a series of realities that, in the current literary milieu, are scarcely represented, with some minor exceptions. Secondly, we will analyse the episodes of affective and sexual awakenings. In the works of Winterson and Gimeno, such moments are usually, but not systematically, associated with the teenage years. We will exposed the ways in which these affections—that do not agree with what society expects of these young people—arise, and what obstacles they face, such as violence in different manifestations; We wil also pay strong attention to the analysis of the context, which holds importance in both writers, but, in a special way, in Gimeno, which places several of her texts in the period of the Franco regime, with its atmosphere of state repression against non-normative sexualities. The representations of the body in the work of both writers will constitute the third objective of this thesis. We will look at the way in which eroticism among women is experienced, in addition to the analysis of images associated, in some ways, with the female body, such as the mother, the witch or the goddess. Attention will also be paid to the body mistreated by violence in its various manifestations, in addition to the beauty standards that reject corporealities considered ugly, old or sick. On the other hand, the analysis of bodily realities will be will also consider a near, almost present, future, in which the body, and the identities expressed through it, change at an increasing speed, through figures such as the cyborg, poshumanist aesthetics or the different options that queer theories offer. We will also pay attention to how the male body is also being transformed and altered through a series of transformations initiated by feminist movements and we will consider whether, it would be possible to achieve a less normative masculinity that is more open to new non-hierarchical gender relations. To conclude, and given that both writers are still active, an overall assessment of their work will be included, calibrating not only their literary value, but also the scope of the different works through the aforementioned themes. We will also speculate about which direction their careers could take in the near future and we will consider whether the label of “lesbian literature” has any foundation within the whole of their productions, or if it is only one more aspect—relevant but not decisive— to be taken into consideration assessing the quality of their writings.
