The authors analyze leisure reading habits in Spain as part of the consumer’s decision process, using a framework of time allocation and emphasizing the role of cultural background. They use the Survey of Cultural Habits and Practices in Spain 2010–2011 to examine factors influencing reading habits, measured by number of books read, applying a Zero Inflated Binomial Negative model. Time restrictions act as a barrier to reading. Female and educated people show different patterns. Furthermore, cultural attitudes and consumption determine the probability of being a reader and the number of books read. This positive effect is linked to highbrow cultural activities. Cultural capital, measured via cultural home equipment that may also capture an income effect, also has a positive impact. No urban/rural differences were found. These results could be used in the design of marketing strategies and public policies to encourage leisure reading in Spain.eng
