Environmental Technology in the Industrial Engineering Degree Curriculum at the University of Oviedo (Spain) within the framework of the EHEA

Abstract

The present study analyses the evolution of university degree curricula as regards the field of Environmental Technology at the Industrial Engineering Schools at the University of Oviedo (Spain). This university currently offers two Industrial Engineering degree curricula: Technical Industrial Engineering (3-year degree or "Diplomatura") and Industrial Engineering (5-year degree or "Licenciatura"). Students who obtain a degree in Technical Industrial Engineering have the possibility of directly entering the Industrial Engineering degree curriculum in the fourth year. With the impending implantation of the European Higher Education Area in the academic year 2010/11, Spanish universities will undergo a major change, especially as regards engineering degrees. The Technical Industrial Engineering Degree curriculum is to be replaced by a 4-year Undergraduate Degree. On completing this degree, students will be able to follow a Master’s Degree curriculum, with a minimum duration of 60 European credit points (one year) and a maximum of 120 European credit points (2 years), which will correspond to the current Industrial Engineering Degree.
