Abstract:

The latest developments in the field of generative linguistics have opened up the possibilities of analysis within the English sentence. The introduction of functional categories in the internal mechanism of the theory makes it possible to increase the already existing complexity of the analyses of adverbials in English. Overall, adverbials tend to be placed at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the sentence. This essay aims to give a view of where adverbials belong in the general framework of generative grammar, based upon a representative corpus of sentences taken out of traditional grammars of the English language.
