The tendency to identify specific references with highly explicit sequences makes it paradoxical talking about proper names as a highly indeterminate kind of signs. Really, proper names are indeterminate signs which are said to refer to something which is very specific. Because of their indetermination they look like words called 'trunk' and they need a very explicit context to be understood; because of the specificity of their reference they are opposite of 'trunk' words.
