Tradiciones académicas, ceremonial y protocolo en la Universidad de Oviedo (1608-1908)

Abstract

El marco en el que se encuadra este estudio tiene como punto de partida el nacimiento de la Universidad de Oviedo. Sin embargo, para su desarrollo ha sido preciso acudir al estado en el que se hallaba el resto de las instituciones universitarias en Castilla. Cuando la ovetense comenzó a funcionar en 1608, existían ya en el territorio de la monarquía hispánica un buen número de estudios generales, si bien será el más influyente, el de Salamanca, el que trasmitirá a la naciente institución no solo sus normas y privilegios, sino también su lenguaje ceremonial, plagado de elementos comunes con el resto de los estudios europeos. Esta investigación pone de manifiesto cómo a estos componentes importados la ovetense añadió otros propios, como por ejemplo su escudo, y con unos y otros elaboró su exclusivo lenguaje ceremonial, adaptado a su naturaleza de universidad regional y periférica. Y este lenguaje particular y único lo aplicó tanto en la construcción de los principales actos académicos -las ceremonias de grados mayores de licenciatura y doctorado- como al protocolo de los excepcionales, tal fue el caso de exequias, homenajes y júbilos. Este trabajo demuestra la importante proyección pública de todos estos actos, en los que la institución se preocupó por mostrarse ante la ciudad con una imagen corporativa muy cuidada, elaborada a través de las vestimentas, los gestos, la música, la jerarquía espacial y la palabra. Además de estas escenificaciones un tanto grandilocuentes, hemos investigado numerosos aspectos de la vida cotidiana académica, que estuvo plagada de actos rituales de obligatorio cumplimiento, pues no ejecutarlos suponía la expulsión inmediata del gremio universitario. Tal era el caso de la matrícula, primer paso para entrar a formar parte de la Universidad y que adquirió, por ello, un carácter iniciático; el desarrollo de las clases y los exámenes, que seguían una pauta inalterable; los complejos tramos de las oposiciones a las cátedras; las pautadas elecciones de cargos académicos; el control de la disciplina y su trascendencia en el ámbito del fuero universitario y tantos otros actos constreñidos en su ejecución a formas ya reguladas de antemano. En nuestra investigación también se concluye cómo este lenguaje ceremonial y ritual se mantuvo prácticamente inalterado durante los doscientos primeros años de funcionamiento de la Universidad. No obstante, con la llegada de la Ilustración, comenzó a gestarse un giro de las formas protocolarias que, aunque no obtuvo resultados inmediatos, sentó las bases de los cambios que llegarían con la legislación del siglo XIX. RESUMEN (en Inglés) The framework where this research is set has its starting point in the birth of the University of Oviedo. However, for the development of the present study it has been necessary to study the state of the rest of university institutions in Castile. When the University of Oviedo started working in 1608, there were a great number of general studies in the territory of the Spanish Monarchy, being the most influential the one of Salamanca, which not only transmitted its regulations and privileges to the new-founded institution, but also its ceremonial language, full of common elements with the rest of the European studies. This research demonstrates how the University of Oviedo added new elements to the ones imported from other institutions, such as its coat of arms, and with a mixture of both it created its unique ceremonial language, suited to its regional and outlying university nature. This particular and unique language was applied both in the creation of the main academic ceremonies ¿ college degree and doctorate ceremonies- and in the protocol of exceptional ceremonies, such as funerals, tributes and jubilations. This study shows the important public scope of all these ceremonies, since the institution was concerned about showing its meticulous corporate image to the city, created with the clothes, the gestures, the music, the spatial hierarchy and the word. Apart from these impressive ceremonies, we have researched several aspects of the everyday academic life, which was full of ritual ceremonies of compulsory performance, since if someone did not carry them out, he would be immediately expelled from the University union. Such is the case of the registration, which was the first step to be part of the University union and which acquired an initiation nature; the development of the lessons and exams, which followed an unchanged guideline; the complex ways of the examinations to a professorship; the regulated elections of academic positions; the control of the discipline and its importance in the university jurisdiction and many other ceremonies, which were restricted to its prior regulated execution. In our research we conclude how this ritual and ceremonial language was kept unchanged for the first two thousand working years of the University. However, with the arrival of the Enlightenment, it began brewing a change in the protocol, and although it did not have immediate results, it laid the foundations of the changes that would arrive with the XIX century Laws.
